On Feb. 1, the Burmese army staged a coup, citing fraud in last November’s election, and has held Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other top civilian government officials in secret detention since. It ended 10 years of civilian government and democracy in Burma.

Since that day, the protests have not stopped. The military’s crackdown on protesters has become increasingly violent, using live ammunition in addition to rubber bullets and gas. At least 18 people were killed on Sunday as security forces broke up a pro-democracy rally, according to “reliable sources” according to the UN. AFP was able to confirm from independent sources that 11 people were killed, but some reports indicate that the death toll was higher than the UN reported.
