China has reported that Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) virus was found on the packaging of imported frozen food.
China’s General Administration of Customs (GAC) also announced that two batches of frozen boneless beef products imported from an Argentinean beef producer were found to be positive for nucleic acid.
Prime Minister Alden pointed out that New Zealand products had been placed in the same cold chain with the Argentinean products that were tested positive for Wuhan pneumonia virus, “I believe New Zealand’s exported frozen beef products will not carry the virus”, because New Zealand has returned to its homeland for the second time with zero confirmed cases, “This is a critical incident for New Zealand”.
Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that “the risk of contracting Wuhan pneumonia through frozen food is low,” China is still issuing import bans in response.
The Chinese authorities previously claimed that a unloading worker in Tianjin had been diagnosed with Wuhan pneumonia, believed to have been infected by the Wuhan pneumonia virus when he touched a package of frozen pigs’ feet imported from Germany on October 19.
