Coronel, the wife of Mexican drug lord “Shorty” Guzman, was arrested today at Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C., on suspicion of cross-border drug trafficking, the U.S. Department of Justice said.
AFP reports that the U.S. Department of Justice says 31-year-old Emma Coronel Aispuro faces one count of conspiracy to smuggle cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana into the United States.
Coronel’s husband, “Shorty” Guzman (Joaquin “ElChapo” Guzman), is the head of Mexico’s most notorious drug cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, and he He was extradited to the United States in 2017 and sentenced to Life in prison in July 2019.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Coronel was not only involved in the cartel’s activities, but was also allegedly involved in facilitating two of Guzman’s Mexican escape attempts, including the one in which Guzman successfully escaped from prison in 2015.
No one knew beforehand that U.S. authorities intended to arrest Coronel.
Coronel, a dual U.S. and Mexican citizen who gave birth to twins for Guzman, appeared in court nearly every day of Guzman’s three-month trial in New York.
Despite persistent allegations of her involvement in Guzman’s career and escape, authorities have given her free access.
She is expected to appear in federal district court in Washington, D.C., tomorrow via video message.
