Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said today that the United States and China can work together on a number of issues if they mend their damaged bilateral relationship, but the United States criticized Beijing for simply avoiding accountability for its actions.
Reuters reported that Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing is ready to restart constructive dialogue with the United States after relations between the United States and China fell to a decades-long low under former President Trump‘s presidency, but he also urged Washington to respect China’s core interests, stop “smearing” the Chinese Communist Party, stop interfering in Beijing’s internal affairs, and stop “condoning” the separatist forces of Taiwan independence.
Wang called on the United States to withdraw tariffs on Chinese goods and abandon what he called irrational efforts to suppress China’s technology industry.
State Department spokesman Ned Price responded, “His statement reflects the continued tendency of the Chinese Communist Party to avoid accountability for its predatory economic practices, lack of transparency, failure to comply with international agreements, and suppression of universal human rights.”
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki also said the U.S. considers the U.S. and China to be in a “robust competitive” relationship.
