UK court rules HSBC does not have to disclose internal documents on Huawei case

A British High Court judge ruled Feb. 19 that HSBC does not have to release internal documents involving the U.S. government’s allegations of fraud against huawei‘s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, Reuters reported.

Because of the U.S. government’s allegations, Meng was arrested at Vancouver Airport in Canada in December 2018 and has been detained at her local Home since then. The U.S. government has requested Meng’s extradition, a case that has seen multiple hearings in the past two years.

The U.S. government has accused Meng, of misleading HSBC about Huawei’s business dealings with Iran, causing the latter to violate U.S. sanctions.

At a hearing in Britain’s High Court last week, Meng’s lawyers said the charges against her were based on statements she made to a top HSBC official in 2003, asking the court to order the release of HSBC documents about the content of the meeting.

But the court ultimately rejected the application and awarded Meng £80,000 in court costs.
