Taiwan‘s national security department recently pointed out that China is adjusting its propaganda war against Taiwan by deliberately cultivating Taiwanese-born anchor netizens and using new media as a propaganda channel, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency.
For example, the Taiwan Association in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, will launch a program to train 1,000 young Taiwanese anchors between August 2020 and 2022, as originally planned. Xiamen, Fujian Province, also held a cross-strait youth netizen anchor competition last year to attract young Taiwanese to participate.
In these programs, Taiwanese on the mainland are encouraged to “speak up for China” in hopes of attracting Taiwanese and reducing resistance to Taiwan’s perceived war effort. In order to expand its influence, the Chinese side is taking into account the social software habits of Taiwan’s youth and is strengthening the use of popular software such as Foton, Jitterbug, and youtube to expand the breadth of propaganda through multiple channels.
Reports indicate that the Chinese side is adjusting their “proxy” support to focus on Taiwanese businessmen, Taiwanese compatriots, Taiwanese youth and mainland spouses.
