In an unprecedented move, Hong Kong’s pro-democracy legislators are resigning in less than three weeks. We interviewed the most senior member of the Legislative Council, Mr. James To of the Democratic Party, who said that even the pan-democrats are leaving, which is the complete end of “one country, two systems”, and that his biggest regret in the 29-year term of the Legislative Council is that there is no genuine universal suffrage in Hong Kong.
After resigning from the Legislative Council, the first thing he had to think about was not where he was going, but what he was busy doing.
Tu Chin-shen said: now to be busy is to enforce things, because enforcing things is also very hard, because decades, there are many documents that may be 92 years, the Internet has even if, do not retain the real thing, 2003 7.1 march against Article 23 of the Basic Law, Article 23 alone has spent more than 10 to 20 (documents), Lehman Brothers collapse, Hong Kong, the secret files alone have more than 20 to 30, and now plans to shred! This procedure alone is quite time-consuming.
He is still a lawyer and a district councillor after his resignation. Although he is leaving the council, he still misses the case he assisted and hopes to do his duty outside the council.
People Power vice-chairman So Ho told the station that he is concerned about the cases handled by James To, and believes that he has been professional in handling the Lamma disaster, as well as the arrests and deaths of Hong Kong people outside Hong Kong. So said he was surprised when he chaired a meeting of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance Amendment Bill Committee last year, “I thought he might not be brave enough to stand in front of the committee, but he took up the post at an important moment”.
The maritime disaster, life imprisonment in the Philippines, and the purchase of a building in the United Kingdom are among the thousands of victims who still want to help their families in the capacity of lawyers.
The most important thing to do during this period of time is to do a good job of the responsibility to the staff, and then the parties concerned, the owner of the case to keep any documents, continue to help people.
The only regret I have is that there is no real universal suffrage in Hong Kong, and Hong Kong people deserve it. However, Hong Kong’s governance policy in the past 20 years or so has been wrong, wrongly judged, with a wrong system that fails to listen to the true views of Hong Kong people.
Since the 1997 handover, the Hong Kong government has pushed hard for the legislation of Article 23 of the Basic Law and the amendment of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance, but to no avail. Last year, the Legislative Council’s Bills Committee on Amendments to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance held a meeting, and since the chairman had not yet been formally elected, the “most senior legislator”, James TO, was the chairman. “He said he never thought the legislation would lead Hong Kong to such a state.
I think a year or so ago, no one thought that the “Sending China Ordinance” could be developed to such an extent that Hong Kong would be finished, nor did they think that Carrie Lam would be the Chief Executive, because of her character flaws, her arrogance or ignorance, that Hong Kong could be played so badly.
The first is the “National Security Law of Hong Kong”, which was passed by the National Security Council. He described Hong Kong people as having always been very moderate, but it seems that Beijing has lost its patience with Hong Kong, fearing that the situation in Hong Kong is not the worst, only worse.
In other words, the previous emphasis was on “one country, two systems”, but now it’s all-round governance, which means that everything is tightened up.
The pro-democracy camp confronted the dictatorship with general remarks, and even the moderate pan-democrats no longer stay in the legislature. He said this time, he wanted to send a strong message to the outside world that “one country, two systems” is over once and for all.
He said, “Leaving is a very important message to the international community, telling them that Hong Kong is finished, one country, two systems, is really finished. Even if you (Beijing) don’t let me run in the future, I may not even run, but even if you don’t let me run in the future, because you can’t tolerate it, in the end, everyone in society will remember, whether it’s always so sad, always so low-pressure, always you’re the biggest, I have faith, I believe in God, my God is bigger than you Communist Party, my God is bigger than you Xi Jinping, I believe in God’s power, if its heart wants someday. It will happen, it will happen to get.
After the interview, Tu Chin-Shen said he was in a hurry to debate with Ho Jun-Yao, and did not say much about the pleasantries, but he did not forget to introduce the smiling “Doraemon” on the bookcase, Tu Chin-Shen said he deliberately placed the doll on the bookcase, hoping that the meeting will not be so dull, can be a little happier.
