The European Union announced on Thursday that it has extended sanctions against 36 Venezuelan government officials for one year, until November 14, 2021. The sanctions include travel bans and asset freezes. The EU has also imposed an arms embargo on Venezuela and a ban on the supply of any equipment that could be used to repress civilians.
The European Commission said in a statement that the decision was based on “the ongoing political, economic, social and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela and the ongoing undermining of democracy, the rule of law and human rights”.
The EU stressed that the sanctions were aimed at officials of the Maduro government and were not intended to harm the Venezuelan people.
