Gina Carano, the actress Disney announced it would no longer work with or be part of the Star Wars franchise, said in a statement on Friday (Feb. 12) that she would be working on a film project with conservative website The Daily Wire. The Daily Wire.
A spokesperson for Lucasfilm said in a statement that “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be employed by Lucasfilm in the future,” after former mixed martial artist and Hollywood actress Gina Carano was announced by Disney+ last Wednesday that she would never be hired. She will not appear in any future “Star Wars” projects.
Carano, best known for her role in the Star Wars spinoff series The Mandalorian and her work in Hollywood blockbusters like Fast & Furious 6 and Deadpool, was fired for controversial comments about “disparate treatment of Trump supporters.
In fact, Carano’s posts on social media about her political stance have been the subject of polarizing debate. The final straw that led to her firing was a now-deleted Instagram post in which Carano compared the situation of today’s Republicans to that of Jews during the Holocaust. The post was reposted, shared and widely discussed, and the hashtag #FireGinaCarano shot to the top of the hashtag.
Lucasfilm argued that Carano’s posting was defamatory. In a statement announcing the termination, a spokesperson said, “Carano’s social media posts denigrating people for their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable to the general public.”
“I’m addressing everyone who lives in fear of the totalitarian mob ‘canceling (the Culture),'” Carano said after announcing on Friday that he was developing a film project with the site, which is run by Ben Shapiro. ‘ in fear, with a direct message of hope. I’m just starting to use my voice, which is now more free than ever, and I hope it will inspire others to do the same. If we don’t let them ‘cancel’ us, they can’t ‘cancel’ us.”
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has appeared in several Hollywood films and left his handprint on the Walk of Fame, was also recently notified by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) that it would plan to expel him from its membership, citing Trump’s “instigation” of the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol. But Trump resigned directly to the union.
In a letter to union head Gabrielle Carteris, Trump said, “I am writing to you today regarding the so-called disciplinary board hearing aimed at revoking my membership. Who cares!” Trump also expressed a desire to no longer be associated with the union.
