New Year’s message to our listeners and friends: What kind of person to be

First of all, I would like to take the opportunity of Radio Free Asia’s “Wang Dan Hotmail” to say Happy Chinese New Year to all of you, Radio Free Asia listeners, and thank you for your long-standing support of my program.

The beginning of a new year is often a Time when we can demand and expect something from ourselves again. At such a time, I would like to say a small message to all my listeners, especially those living in mainland China, and that is: What kind of people do we want to be in the new year?

I wish you all to be a healthy person. It has been more than a year since the New Coronavirus ravaged the world, causing major damage to the whole world, to the whole human race. In the new year, I wish everyone to come out of the shadow of the Epidemic and protect their health as soon as possible. Having a healthy body is not only responsible for yourself, but also for your Family.

I wish everyone to be a person with a memory. Considering the Chinese government’s praise and self-praise for its so-called “anti-epidemic achievements,” every Chinese should ask themselves: Do you remember the heart-wrenching and painful events that took place in Wuhan a year ago when the city was closed? Do you remember why a doctor named Li Wenliang was warned by the police? Do you still remember the daily diary of a Writer named Fang Fang? Do you still remember Chen Qiushi, Fang Bin, Li Zehua and other citizen journalists who recorded on the spot? A nation with a memory has a future, and likewise, being a person with a memory is what makes us worthy of this nation.

I wish everyone to be a person who does not tell lies. In today’s China, it is increasingly dangerous to tell the truth. It is understandable to circumvent the danger and preserve oneself. Therefore, in the face of an authoritarian regime and injustice, I will not say that everyone must be brave enough to stand up and express their protest. But if we cannot speak the truth, we can at least refrain from speaking falsehoods. When we see that there are still many low-income people living in poverty in China, you can keep your mouth shut, but you should not follow the government and say “China has already completed the task of poverty eradication”; when clubhouse seconds are banned in China, you can not protest, but do not deceive yourself and others that there is still some room for free speech in China. room for free speech. If in the new year, all Chinese people start to stop telling lies, change will happen in this country.

Finally, I would also like to wish everyone to be a public conscious person. We should know that in a system like China, where the Party rules the country and where the state can deprive individuals, even the wealthy, of their property at will, there is no such thing as a completely personal Life; your life is tied to the larger environment. Because of this, even for our personal benefit, we should be public people: caring about public affairs and participating in public discussions. The change of this country cannot depend on those inside Zhongnanhai, the hope lies in every Chinese person. Changing ourselves is the beginning of protecting our own interests. So, in the new year, let’s be citizens, not just residents and nationals.

This is my personal little expectation, for reference only. Thank you.
