Donald Trump Jr., son of former U.S. President Donald Trump, said Tuesday (Feb. 9) that the Republican Party needs to fight back to ensure electoral integrity or it will never win another election.
In an interview on Fox News’ “The Laura Ingraham Show” Tuesday, Donald Jr. said that if Republicans don’t stand up, if they don’t act, if they do what they do best, which is pretend they are standing on principle, they will “never win another election.”
Donald Jr. added that they (Republican lawmakers) had better learn from this and make sure that “we really have fairness in our elections, that we really get things right” and that they can’t be manipulated in this way, or they won’t even be able to keep their jobs as lawmakers for a few years.
On Wednesday, the Senate impeachment trial against former President Trump entered its second day. Trump’s lawyers argue that an impeachment trial against a citizen who no longer holds the office of president is unconstitutional.
Donald Jr. predicted that the majority of Americans will reject the impeachment trial.
“I think this is actually showing the American people again how ridiculous it is and how far it has gone.” He added, “I think that they [Democrats] have actually lifted a stone and I think they have lost all credibility as arbiters of truth because no one believes them.”
In January, House Democrats and 10 Republicans impeached Trump for allegedly “inciting a riot,” saying his speech to supporters incited a crowd to break into the Capitol on Jan. 6 when Congress was holding a certification of election results.
But Donald Jr. stressed that Trump called on protesters to make their voices heard “peacefully” and “patriotically” on Jan. 6.
For now, it appears that the Senate trial will not result in Trump’s conviction. Sixty-seven senators must vote to convict Trump, and recent procedural votes related to the trial suggest that it is unlikely that enough senators will vote to convict Trump.
