U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) released a video Thursday (Feb. 4) warning of the Biden administration’s impatient embrace of the Chinese Communist Party and its dangerous policy strategy. He cautioned about the rhetoric of Biden’s Cabinet nominees.
Cruz has repeatedly reminded Biden about the Chinese Communist Party since the start of his hearings on his Cabinet nominees. In a video released Thursday (Feb. 4), he cautioned about Biden nominees with close ties to the Chinese Communist Party, some of whom have been confirmed.
In the video, Cruz said, “The Chinese Communist Party is the greatest geopolitical threat facing the United States in the next century. The truly disturbing pattern we see in one Biden nominee after another is their enthusiastic embrace of the Chinese Communist Party.”
The video flashes images of Biden’s Cabinet nominees, including U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations nominee Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Secretary of Commerce nominee Gina Raimondo and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Cruz first mentioned Thomas Greenfield. On Thursday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 18-4 to approve her appointment, and the Senate will take a final vote on it.
Cruz was one of the senators on the Foreign Relations Committee who voted against it. His opposition was based on the fact that Thomas Greenfield had praised the Chinese Communist Party’s aggressive investment in Africa during a speech at the Confucius Institute at Savannah State University (Georgia) in 2019.
Cruz said Thomas Greenfield’s speech did not contain a single word of criticism of the Chinese Communist Party. He emphasized that the Confucius Institute is a Communist government mouthpiece funded by the Chinese Communist Party, and that Thomas Greenfield’s speech at the Confucius Institute was truly shocking.
Thomas Greenfield herself expressed regret at that speech during the hearing, acknowledging that the CCP has self-interested and exploitative goals in Africa, but pleaded that she had intended to express that Africans need to open their eyes to see how to deal with the CCP.
The video also mentions Commerce Secretary nominee Raimondo. Cruz asked her at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing last Wednesday (Feb. 3) whether she had promised to keep huawei and other Communist Party of China technology companies on the Commerce Department’s entity blacklist. Raimondo dodged the question, saying only, “I will commit to working with you.
Cruz voted against Raimondo’s nomination, but Raimondo was approved by the Commerce Committee by a vote of 21-3 and is now awaiting final confirmation by the Senate.
Cruz also referenced Mayorkas, who has taken office as secretary of Homeland Security, in the video. Cruz noted that in a 2015 inspector general report, Mayorkas was accused of using the EB-5 visa program to seek political favors for well-connected Democratic stakeholders and allegedly securing EB-5 visas for Huawei’s vice president.
In addition to the Biden nominee’s comments, the Biden Administration has taken a number of actions in favor of the Chinese Communist Party. On the same day Cruz released the video, Biden called the Chinese Communist Party “the toughest competitor” in a State Department foreign policy speech, but said he was “willing to work with the Chinese government as long as it is in the interest of the United States.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who has had a decades-long relationship with Biden, told reporters on his first day in office that the U.S.-China relationship “is arguably the most important relationship we have in the world.
Under Biden, the U.S. has rejoined the Paris Climate Accord and the World health Organization (WHO). At the same Time, the Biden administration has delayed a ban on investments related to the Chinese Communist Party’s military. In China, certain companies have names similar to, but not identical to, Communist Party military companies. The U.S. Treasury Department under Biden has temporarily allowed Americans to invest in these companies.
In an interview with CBS last year, Obama-era Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he believes Biden “has been wrong on almost every major foreign policy and national security issue for the last 40 years. “
