According to the earthquake report issued by Taiwan’s meteorological authorities, at 1:36 a.m. on the 7th, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the eastern waters of Taiwan.

Taiwan media reported that the quake was felt throughout Taiwan. The epicenter of the earthquake was 85.1 kilometers east of the Yilan County government, located in the eastern waters of Taiwan, with a scale of 6.1 on the Richter scale and a depth of 112 kilometers. The maximum tremor Yilan County, Miaoli County, 4 levels.

The report said that after the earthquake, the national level alerts were sent in quick succession, some people even received 19 notifications, people everywhere were awakened by cell phone alerts.

Many Taiwanese netizens woke up from their sleep and left comments on the Internet saying: “New Taipei shakes the head so dizzy”, “Keelung feels it”, “Taichung feels it”, “Kaohsiung 9 floor feels it, shaking for a long Time “, “Taoyuan is very sensory”, “the earthquake alarm sounded wildly awakened”, “really afraid to sleep”, “hope Everything is safe”.

The Meteorological Bureau’s Earthquake Measurement Center, said Wu Jianwen, the earthquake is the Philippine Sea plate submerged under the Eurasian continental plate, resulting in submerged belt-type earthquakes, the next 3 or 4 days may occur aftershocks, but the scale will not be too large, about the size of 4.

As for the people in some areas woke up frightened by the cell phone alarm sounding wildly, Wu Jianwen said that because the earthquake epicenter in the more distant waters of northeast Taiwan, and the source of the earthquake is deeper, for the earthquake speed reporting system will have automatically solved multiple times to update the warning message, which basically can only be considered 1 earthquake; has been processed, expecting the phenomenon of repeated sending to be corrected in the short term.

The timing of this earthquake was only 1 day different from the anniversaries of the 2016 Tainan earthquake and the 2018 Hualien earthquake.

At 3:57 a.m. on February 6, 2016, an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck 27.1 kilometers east-north of the Pingtung County government, with a maximum magnitude of 7 in the Xinhua area of Tainan City, causing the collapse of several buildings, including the most serious Tainan Yongkang Viguan Building, lying flat on Yongda Road, killing 115 people and injuring countless others.

At 11:50 p.m. on February 6, 2018, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 occurred in Hualien, with a maximum tremor of 7 in Hualien, causing the collapse of the Commander-in-Chief Grand Hotel and the destruction of the building and many roads, including the collapse of the Yunmen Cuidian building in 8 seconds after the earthquake.

In this regard, Wu Jianwen stressed that although the aforementioned earthquakes were both in early February, but the causes were different and it was really a coincidence in time, reminding the public not to associate too much.
