Georgia’s top election official is sending a team of investigators to “Fulton” County after a ballot “problem” was discovered in the county, where the counting of ballots turned the tide in the state’s favor and put Vice President Biden ahead of President Donald Trump, the state’s top election official reported Nov. 8.
While Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger did not disclose the nature of the ballot problem, he announced late Saturday that investigators were heading to the State Farm Arena in Fulton County to “secure the ballot and protect all legitimate ballots.”
“Fulton County has discovered a problem involving the ballots they reported on Friday. Officials are at State Farm Arena to rescan what they did on Friday,” said Raffensperger. “The Secretary of State has a monitor on site, has sent additional investigators and has sent the Deputy Secretary of State to oversee the entire process to ensure complete protection of the voting process and to protect all legitimate ballots. Observers from both political parties are also there.”
Brendan Keefe, chief investigator for WXIA in Atlanta, said the issue “could significantly impact Biden’s current lead in Georgia.”
Fulton County released a statement late Saturday in which they disclosed that “some ballots were not counted” and a “small number” of ballots “were not scanned” in Friday night’s vote.
“Out of an abundance of caution, all provisional, military and [Uniformed Personnel and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act] ballots scanned on Friday, November 6 will be rescanned tonight,” the statement reads. “The documents uploaded last night will be removed and replaced with documents that will be rescanned tonight.”
Fulton County Elections Director Richard Barron described the issue as a failure to transfer files to the server, which necessitated the rescanning of some ballots. He also said that the rescanning process has been completed.
“Barron said his team re-scanned 342 ballots on Saturday, adding that some files had not been transferred to the server and some ballots had to be scanned on Saturday. He said he didn’t know if it was a software or human issue that caused the problem.”
In Georgia, the difference between Biden and Trump was about 7,200 votes, a slim margin that prompted Raffensperger to announce Friday that the state would conduct a recount.
