Public outrage has been caused by Spanish public officials jumping the queue to get the new coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) vaccine first. Defense Chief of Staff Miguelángel Villarroya resigned on Jan. 23.
Spanish news site El Confidencial Digital said on Jan. 12 that Villarroya and some of the military’s top brass were vaccinated after the Interior Ministry fired a lieutenant colonel a few days ago and Villarroya resigned on Jan. 23.
The military issued a statement saying that Villarroya “is to protect the image of the army” and resigned from the defense minister on Jan. 23. Villarroya, 63, said he had “never intended to take advantage of undue privileges”.
The national code in Spain’s vaccination strategy stipulates that only residents of nursing homes and health care workers can be vaccinated with the new crown vaccine. But in recent weeks, public officials have “jumped the queue,” including a medical adviser in Murcia who works for the government.
