Successive mass protests by retired military personnel in Beijing and elsewhere in recent years have led to difficulties in building up the military, as proposed by Communist Party leader Xi Jinping.
China will give the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) officers and soldiers a huge 40 percent pay raise later this year in a bid to attract more intellectual talent to the military or to build military morale by promoting young non-commissioned officers, according to multiple sources cited by Hong Kong‘s South China Morning Post on Saturday.
Unnamed military sources in Beijing said that border troops, especially those stationed in Tibet, Xinjiang and the East and South China Seas, will receive high rates of pay increases.
Another military source pointed out that although the Central Military Commission has previously regulated the military’s career and career change, the relevant mechanism is not transparent and the documents are not available to active or retired military personnel except for a few senior officers. The career prospects of military personnel and their health care and welfare benefits after changing careers are still their biggest concerns.
Official statistics show that China currently has as many as 57 million veterans.
