Taiwan‘s military held a military confrontation exercise on the eve of Chinese New Year to repel attacks from the other side of the border, using mainland Chinese troops as a hypothetical enemy.
Taiwan Ministry of National Defense website news, Taiwan Army’s 584th Brigade Combined Military Battalion on Tuesday (Jan. 19) simulated a Communist raid on Taoyuan airport in Hukou Township, Taoyuan, to practice airport protection. The third combat zone stressed that the army uphold the mission of “national defense security without holidays”, “to fight the war training of this service, in the Spring Festival family reunion, will continue to stand guard for the people of the country, guarding the home, to give the country stability power”.
According to statistics on Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense website, Chinese mainland military aircraft intruded into Taiwan’s southwestern airspace for 16 days from Jan. 1 to Jan. 19, 2021.
China’s 2021 Work Conference on Taiwan was held in Beijing on Jan. 17-18. Wang Yang, chairman of China’s National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, delivered a speech reiterating his opposition to independence and promotion of unity. He accused Taiwan authorities of obstructing cross-strait exchanges. Taiwan’s Land Commission said in a written statement on Jan. 18 that the CCP’s policy toward Taiwan has long failed to face cross-strait realities and ignored the fact that Taiwan’s mainstream public opinion does not agree with its one-sided political framework that negates national sovereignty.
The Council called on the Chinese Communist Party to take a respectful and understanding attitude, to conduct constructive cross-strait dialogues and exchanges without setting preconditions, and to pragmatically discuss ways to get along peacefully in order to help enhance the well-being of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
