Telephone lines in the Russian Consulate General in New York have been down for two days and the Internet is experiencing a staged outage on January 19, a day before the U.S. presidential inauguration.
According to the TASS news agency (TASS), according to the Russian Consul General in New York, all the multiple city phone lines in the embassy were down and the Internet was out of order. The consul general said, “Nothing like this has ever happened before.”
According to another media outlet, the Independent, their emails to the Russian Embassy were also returned, saying that the server could not be found. According to the media outlet’s source in the embassy, this has been going on for two days and “has never been heard of before.”
A tweet in Russian on the Twitter account of the “Russian Consulate General in New York” reads: “Dear guests, since January 18 of this year, the American side has completely cut all indoor telephone lines of the Russian Embassy in New York and the Internet has been disrupted in stages. “
In another tweet, the embassy encouraged people to contact each other by email or visit the official embassy website.
According to Sputnik, another official Russian media outlet, the Russian Embassy has received an official explanation from the U.S., which said that the phone lines were cut for “technical” reasons.
“In 2017, Trump ordered the closure of the Russian Consulate General in San Francisco and the trade representative office in Washington, D.C., giving diplomats only two days to pack up, and later in 2019 he closed the Russian Embassy in Seattle, the Voice of Russia said.
On Jan. 17, Varney, a political dissident leader who is a frequent critic of the Russian government, was arrested at a Moscow airport upon his return to Russia on charges of “violating the conditions of his parole and probation,” according to a recent report in this newspaper.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently issued a statement saying, “The United States strongly condemns Russia’s decision to arrest Navalny. We have taken close note of his arrest as the latest attempt to silence independent voices critical of the Russian authorities and opposition figures.”
Pompeo asked the Russian government to give all political parties and candidates room to compete reasonably. “Navalny is not the problem. We demand his immediate and unconditional release.”
At press time on the afternoon of the 19th, there was still no further notice on the official Twitter feed of the Russian Consulate General in New York regarding the restoration of the phone line.
