CIA director resigns Tuesday, Pompeo thanks her

Gina Haspel, then director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), in Washington, D.C., in May 2020.

Gina Haspel resigned as director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on Tuesday (19), one day before the U.S. presidential transition. On the same day, outgoing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo thanked her in a suspected tweet.

In her resignation statement Tuesday, Haspel said, “Leading this outstanding organization has been the greatest honor of my life, and I am deeply proud of the work we have accomplished together.”

Haspel was appointed by Trump as CIA director in May 2018, and Trump personally attended his inauguration ceremony.

However, the CIA was accused of working against Trump in this U.S. election and was highly criticized by the conservative camp. There were rumors of “Haspel’s arrest” during this period.

On Jan. 15, Trump ally and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell was spotted visiting the White House with a document in his hand requesting the appointment of a Defense Department official to act for the CIA. Lindell later said that it was a lawyer who entrusted him with a proposal to “replace Haspel” to Trump.

However, another Trump ally, outgoing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, is suspected to have just tweeted his thanks to Haspel.

Pompeo tweeted on Tuesday, “The CIA director is nothing without a great team. I have. We have done very much. I said we would take risks and achieve (our goals). We both did it with tremendous professionalism – the bad guys will never know what hit them.”

He then expressed his “gratitude to those I can name here and the countless others who are still crushing evil in the darkness.” First on the list of those he thanked by name was “Gina H.,” suspected to be Haspel’s initials.
