Nearly 40,000 more people have been infected with the disease in the UK and 89,000 have died, the most in Europe.

Authorities in the United Kingdom today reported 38,598 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and 671 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths from the disease to nearly 90,000 nationwide. Meanwhile, Italy and France both reported more than 10,000 new confirmed cases.

UK government figures today also show that nearly 3.9 million people have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine so far.

According to Johns Hopkins University data, the U.K. authorities have reported a cumulative total of about 3.4 million confirmed cases and more than 89,000 deaths from the disease, the highest number of European countries.

In addition, the Italian Ministry of health reported today that there are 12,545 new confirmed cases and 377 people have died of the disease in Italy.

Since the outbreak surfaced in February last year, Italy has reported more than 2.38 million confirmed cases and 82,177 deaths from the disease, the latter figure ranking second among European countries.

France’s public health authorities today reported 16,642 new confirmed cases and 141 deaths, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to more than 2.9 million and more than 70,000 deaths.
