Thousands of Honduran citizens passed through Guatemala on the 16th, hoping to eventually make it to the U.S. border in search of immigration.
Less than a week from the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, Guatemalan officials said today that at least 9,000 illegal Honduran immigrants have entered the country of Guatemala, the group of illegal immigrants all the way north, hoping to eventually enter the United States.
Most of the illegal immigrants who came on foot intend to go to Mexico first, then enter the United States, a total of thousands of kilometers.
AFP reports that the first group of illegal immigrants passed through a border police post yesterday evening, with others following one after another.
The first group of illegal immigrants numbered around 6,000, and 3,000 more entered the country today, officials said.
The government statement condemned the illegal immigrants as a violation of Guatemala’s sovereignty and called on Honduran authorities to “curb the mass departure of residents through permanent preventive measures.
According to Reuters news, the illegal immigrant contingent will likely face pressure to disintegrate once it arrives in Mexico. Mexican officials pointed out that the immigration agreement between the Mexican state and the United States is still in place, which means that the migrant team will be removed.

Thousands of security forces have been deployed in Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, and the Guatemalan military detained hundreds of illegal immigrants yesterday.
