Facebook announces ban on ads for weapons accessories and protective equipment in the U.S.

Facebook Inc. said today that it will ban ads for weapons accessories and protective gear from users in the United States, effective immediately and running until at least two days after President-elect Joe Biden’s 20th inauguration.

Facebook Inc said it will now ban users in the United States from posting ads for weapons accessories such as gun cabinets, undershirts and holsters after President Trump‘s supporters attacked the Capitol on June 6.

We have banned weapons, ammunition, and products that enhance the performance of guns such as silencers, and now we will also ban ads for weapons accessories,” Facebook said in a blog post.

Three Democratic U.S. senators wrote to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg yesterday, saying that certain products are clearly designed to be used in armed combat and that ads promoting them should be permanently banned.

For Biden’s inauguration, Facebook yesterday blocked the ability to create new campaigns near the White House, the Capitol and state capitol buildings in Washington, D.C., until the 20th of this month.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has previously warned of possible armed protests in Washington, D.C. and all 50 state capitals before the inauguration on the 20th.
