Trump only has a few days left in his term, but with his never-ending character, he still keeps playing his role in the era seriously as he bids farewell.
Just a few days ago, the Trump administration released a secret document called the “U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy Framework”, which, by convention, is only allowed to be released after 30 years, and the fact that the U.S. government has made such a breakthrough proves that today’s world situation has reached the point of no return.
This is a goodwill gesture from the Trump administration to the Asia-Pacific countries and regions, as well as a parting gesture to the government and people of Taiwan.
The tone of the document is “to use military force to deter China for the United States and its allies and partners; while building the capabilities and concepts to defeat China in a variety of conflicts.”
The strategic objectives outlined in the document include, but are not limited to: 1) denying China air and sea control in the “first island chain” in the event of conflict; 2) defending the countries and regions of the first island chain, including Taiwan; and 3) achieving dominance in all areas outside the first island chain.
This is an international political legacy that Trump has left to the Biden administration. He is worried that the Biden administration will vigorously adjust its original policy toward China, so he pre-released this secret document and made the main spirit of the document public, so that the world will remember the foundation of relations with China laid by him during his tenure and force Biden to act within the circle of policy he has defined. If Biden wants to go against the political intentions left by Trump, he must have sufficient justification to convince the nation and allies.
This is also Trump’s assurance to the Asia-Pacific allies who follow him, that is, he has not failed to live up to his promise to the allies, and he has left behind an outline of U.S. policy toward China to safeguard the interests of the Asia-Pacific allies and to guarantee the integrity of the U.S. anti-communist front with all countries. This outline of U.S. policy toward China has limited Biden’s relations with China, giving all Asia-Pacific allies something to follow and full confidence in the stability of U.S. policy.
This declassified document is a great gift to Tsai. After Tsai’s impatience to congratulate Biden on his election, Trump still showed such goodwill to Taiwan’s government and people, regardless of the past, which at least proves that Trump is not a small-minded businessman but has the poise of a statesman.
The Tsai Ing-wen administration received this big gift and breathed a sigh of relief on the spot. Although the Biden administration’s policy toward China is still unclear, and although many of the new administration officials appointed by Biden are “old friends” of Taiwan, after all, a day in international politics is too long, and Tsai is not absolutely sure whether Biden is in cahoots with the Chinese Communist Party. But now there is this “U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategic Framework”, which is the macro policy basis, which even emphasizes the United States’ substantive commitment to Taiwan’s defense, which is the same as saying that once the Chinese Communist Party moves against Taiwan, the United States will definitely intervene militarily, not only to deny the Chinese Communist Party air and sea control, but also to defend the countries and regions of the first island chain, including Taiwan.
This declassified document is a warning to the Chinese Communist Party. Although the Chinese Communist Party has long been attacking and intimidating Taiwan, it is not entirely sure whether the United States will intervene in cross-strait military disputes at the critical moment. They certainly hope that the U.S. stand by, but know that only their own subjective wishes, now that the Americans have made it clear in advance, the Chinese Communist Party will not dare to take any chances, before the war, had to estimate the possibility of U.S. participation in the war. In view of the disparity in military power between the two countries, the Chinese Communist Party had to be careful in taking the opportunity to fight.
The declassified document is a heavy slap in the face to the KMT and Ma Ying-jeou. Ma Ying-jeou previously advocated “the beginning of the war is the end of the war”, is to hope that the United States in the cross-strait war to stand aside, the United States does not intervene, the Chinese Communist Party has an overwhelming advantage, Taiwan can not defend, once the war will be a total collapse, unmanageable. This is Ma Ying-jeou and the Kuomintang’s way of interfering with Taiwan’s inter-democratic relations and propaganda for the Communist Party’s military intimidation, in order to help achieve the Communist Party’s unification project. At this point, the true nature of the KMT and Ma Ying-jeou’s betrayal of Taiwan’s local interests and their aiding and abetting of the enemy were exposed.
In the four years of Trump’s administration, the U.S. government has given full support to Tsai Ing-wen’s government, which has led to the enhancement of Taiwan’s international status and the political and economic boom in Taiwan today. Although the support for Taiwan is another side of the siege of the Chinese Communist Party, objectively, it has preserved the only piece of democratic and free land for Chinese people, and kept our optimism and faith in the future when we are under pressure from fighting the powerful Chinese Communist Party.
Even if Trump has to say goodbye to American politics and may not have a chance to return to power in 2024, Trump is still indebted to Taiwan and Hong Kong. He has single-handedly ruled out the doom and gloom of Hong Kong being violently suppressed by the Chinese Communist army, and changed Taiwan’s international situation by supporting Taiwan’s democratic resistance to the Communist Party. He has done a lot of good, and we cannot forget him.
