Hong Kong lawyer and pro-democracy district councilor Wong Kwok-tung was arrested and taken away by the Hong Kong police today on the charge of “aiding and abetting a criminal”. Before leaving, he shouted to Hong Kong people, hoping that they would continue to uphold the values of democracy, rule of law and human rights, and not give up their insistence. In this regard, Hong Kong people have lamented that they have heard of Chinese human rights lawyers being arrested in the past, but this scenario is being played out in Hong Kong today, and Hong Kong has inevitably become Chinese under the framework of “one country, two systems”.
According to Radio Television Hong Kong and Standpoint News, 71-year-old Wong Kwok-tung was taken to his office today for a search by Hong Kong police in connection with a case of assisting 12 Hong Kong people to smuggle people into Hong Kong. As he was escorted away, Wong shouted to reporters at the scene, “Insist on democracy, rule of law and human rights, insist, Hong Kong people don’t (don’t) give up.”
Once the news broke, Hong Kong netizens have cheered, “Uncle Tung to hold on!” The news came out, Hong Kong netizens have cheered, “Uncle Tung must hold on”, “Huang lawyer hold on, the real Hong Kong people support you! The Hong Kong people support you!”, “Insist on democracy, rule of law and human rights! Uncle Tung hang in there! Hong Kong people, do not give up!” However, some Hong Kong netizens sighed, “Hong Kong has fallen so far, see such a picture, I as an ordinary citizen I feel ashamed to home”, “used to listen to ‘mainland (referring to China) human rights lawyers arrested’, now finally in Now it is finally happening in Hong Kong”, “It is not new that human rights lawyers are dragged in a certain country”, lamenting that Hong Kong has been “Chineseized”.
Wong Kwok-tung actively supports the anti-China movement, including acting as a volunteer lawyer for those arrested, and in April last year launched the “Umbrella” restaurant project, which provides funding to help Hong Kong people who have gone to Taiwan to find another life to become self-reliant. In October last year, the “Umbrella” restaurant was splashed with obscenities by gangsters, which was a strong political warning.
