Twitter says Uganda’s Internet shutdown “violates basic human rights,” according to a report in Breitbart.com on Tuesday .
The report said Twitter has spoken out in favor of free speech and against the shutdown of the Internet in Uganda .
Twitter’s public policy arm tweeted its opposition to reports that Internet access is being shut down ahead of this week’s general election in Uganda, where President Yoweri Museveni is seeking a sixth term in office. He has been in office for 35 years.
Last week, Twitter permanently banned President Trump from accessing its platform. It also continues to suspend and expel tens of thousands of President Trump’s supporters. Twitter’s main competitor, Parler, was also kicked off Amazon’s servers.
This week, however, Twitter came out in support of free speech and an open Internet, arguing that “access to information and free speech, including open dialogue on Twitter, has never been more important than in the democratic process, especially during elections.”
Twitter also specifically opposes the blocking of “social media and messaging apps.”
In the run-up to the November 2020 election, Twitter censored a New York Post story that exposed emails from the laptop of Hunter Biden, son of Joe Biden.
Among the emails was a description of the Biden family’s attempt to form a joint venture with a Chinese company in which Joe Biden – the “big man” – would receive a 10 percent stake.
Former Vice President Joe Biden told reporters on the 2019 campaign trail that he has never discussed his family’s overseas business interests.
Reaction from mainland Chinese netizens
The above statement from Twitter also reached mainland China, and to their surprise, netizens in mainland China, despite being in an extremely closed internet environment, were very consistent in their understanding, with netizens saying.
“How ironic.”
“Twitter is shameless enough”
“Twitter still has the nerve to talk about human rights issues, it’s so shameless
“Of course it is unplugged [two ha]”
“Waiting for Twitter to go out of business”
“The face of Tweeter! [anger]”
“Does Twitter have a vest in Weibo, go strip it”
“The evil has its own evil grinding”
