President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team said Jan. 11 that the theme of Biden’s inauguration will be “American unity. He will participate in a number of events with former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush Jr. and Bill Clinton from both parties to emphasize the message of uniting the country.
In a statement, the Biden transition team said, “At a time of unprecedented crisis and deep divisions, American Unity reflects the beginning of a new national journey that restores America’s soul, unites the country and creates a path to a brighter future. Biden’s inauguration is scheduled to take place two weeks after President Trump‘s supporters stormed the Capitol on June 6.
After the swearing-in ceremony on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, Biden, Vice President-elect Harris and their spouses will hold a Pass in Review ceremony to observe the military at a social distance. This is a long-standing U.S. military tradition reflecting the peaceful transfer of power to the new commander in chief of the three armed services, during which the president-elect reviews the readiness of the military.
Next, Biden, Harris, as well as Obama, Bush Jr. and Clinton and their spouses, will lay wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, according to the Biden transition team. Previously, President Trump has said he will not attend Biden’s inauguration, while Vice President Pence will be there to participate. But it is not yet clear whether Pence will participate in the wreath laying ceremony.
The United States has four living former presidents, 96-year-old former President Jimmy Carter and 93-year-old former first lady Rosalynn Carter have said they will not attend the inauguration. His transition team also said that Biden would then join the military that escorted him to the White House.
The inauguration marks a new chapter for the American people: a healed, united, unified and united America,” said Tony Allen, head of the transition team, in a statement, “It is time to turn the page on this divisive era. The inauguration event will reflect our shared values and remind people that we are stronger together than we are apart.”
Most related celebrations will be largely online due to the Communist Party’s viral pandemic. The Biden transition team previously said the footprint of the swearing-in ceremony will be “extremely limited” to ensure officials and guests observe social distancing and other security measures.
