U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo Statement on the Fate of 12 Hong Kong People

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement Dec. 31 on the fate of 12 Hong Kong people, strongly condemning the Shenzhen court’s decision and calling on Chinese authorities to immediately and unconditionally release 10 of those sentenced to serve prison terms.

The statement said Hong Kong used to be a thriving and prosperous region before the Chinese Communist Party and its subservient people in Hong Kong destroyed the rule of law and hollowed out the freedoms of its people. The “12 Hong Kong people” who managed to escape tyranny deserve a hero’s welcome overseas, not to be arrested, tried in secret and sentenced to prison.

The statement said the persecution of the 12 Hong Kong people, two of whom were minors at the time of their arrest, once again revealed Beijing’s brutality, its blatant disregard for the international treaties it has signed and its contempt for the rights of the people of Hong Kong.

The statement condemned the Communist regime, saying that a regime that prevents its own people from leaving cannot claim greatness or global leadership; such a regime is nothing more than a weak dictatorship that fears its own people.
