Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping hosted a democratic life meeting of the Politburo last week, and when the Politburo members spoke, only Liu He was the most unusual, speaking without removing his mask. Liu He’s move is unusually speculative because of the outbreak of the CCP virus in Beijing, which has attacked the Xicheng District where Zhongnanhai is located.
Xi Jinping hosted a democratic life meeting of the Politburo from Dec. 24 to 25. News videos show that all 18 Politburo members wore masks, except for the seven Politburo Standing Committee members sitting in the inner circle who did not wear masks. When these Politburo members spoke, they all took off their masks and then spoke, except for Chinese Vice Premier Liu He, who wore a mask when he spoke.
Hong Kong media “Ming Pao” reported on the 29th that “at last week’s democratic life meeting, everyone took off their masks to show their true faces when they spoke, except Vice Premier Liu He, who also insisted on not taking off his mask when he spoke, unknown whether he was physically ill or for other reasons.”
In May 2013, Xi introduced Liu He, then director of the CFO, to visiting U.S. National Security Adviser Donilon, saying, “He is very important to me.”
As the official and yellow calendar New Year approaches, recent outbreaks across China have been increasing and have once again taken over Beijing, with an outbreak in Beijing’s Xicheng District, home to Zhongnanhai, threatening the Communist Party’s top brass.
On December 29, Beijing announced seven new confirmed local cases and declared an emergency state for the prevention and control of the epidemic in the capital.
Due to the seriousness of the current epidemic in Beijing, Liu He spoke at the Politburo meeting unlike others, wearing a mask, which immediately drew outside attention.
