In Jingzhou, Hubei Province, the statue of Guan Gong located in the Guan Gong Cultural Exhibition Center was earlier accused of unauthorized construction.
The statue relocation project was announced on Tuesday (29) on the electronic tender trading platform, which mentioned that the statue will be assembled off-site after demolition, with a total investment of RMB 40 million (about HK$48 million).
The announcement indicated that the bidders of the project were Jingzhou Tourism Investment Development Group Co., Ltd, and the project name and content were “dismantling and off-site assembly of the statue’s copper pieces”, while the location was Jingzhou District’s Point General Terrace.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has informed that the construction of the statue of Guan Gong within the ancient city is illegal and has damaged the appearance of the ancient city, so the local government was asked to rectify the situation. After the incident came to light, some netizens questioned the source of funding for the relocation and demolition, saying that the more you demolish, the more money you spend, it is better not to demolish, put in place and did not hinder anyone; others jokingly called it “carelessness lost Jingzhou”.
