Cell phone screen with flaxseed oil microcapsules 20 minutes to repair cracks

Cell phone flying to the ground, can be said to be “low head” one of the frightening moments, once the screen cracked, repair costs must be expensive.

The Institute of Advanced Composite Materials of the South Korean Academy of Science and Technology has developed a cell phone screen with flaxseed oil microencapsulation technology, which can automatically repair 95% of screen cracks in as little as 20 minutes.

The team mixed flaxseed oil microcapsules with polydimethylsiloxane containing silicone chemistry, and then put the mixed solution on a transparent polyimide (CPI) film for cell phones and let it dry. When the film is pressed to the cracking point, the surface layer of the microcapsules also cracks and releases the linseed oil, which hardens into a clear solid when exposed to air, thus filling and repairing the cracks.

Laboratory tests found that the hardening process took several hours to repair cracks at room temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, but heating it to 70 degrees Celsius or exposing it to ultraviolet light accelerated the repair process, and the researchers believe the material has promise for a wide range of applications in other electronic devices. The research has been published in the journal Composite Materials Part B: Engineering.
