Chinese variety show boycotts foreign holidays? Christmas elements fogged up sparking hot debate

In recent years, China has frequently reported the boycott of Western holidays, Hunan online video platform “Mango TV” variety show “Star Detective” season 6 premiered on the evening of the 24th, all the Christmas decorations were almost fogged, the picture except for the artists a blur, causing public debate.

The “Star Detective” broadcast on the 24th, the story is set in a hotel, the scene was decorated with a lot of Christmas decorations. However, when the program was officially broadcast, the Christmas tree and Christmas wreath were fogged up, and many shots were even blurred except for the artists. Some of the artists originally wore Christmas hats and hair ornaments, but they were also covered up with animated patterns.

However, there are still some decorations that were not covered up by the post-production.

It is reported that after the broadcast of the program, Chinese netizens have argued that the TV station is overdoing it; some also said that even if they want to “boycott foreign holidays”, this approach is “too crude” and “unnecessary”.

Another netizen cited the case of a dormitory counselor at Harbin Institute of Technology sending chocolates to students during Thanksgiving in November this year and was prosecuted as an example, saying that the TV station did so to prevent someone from “settling scores afterwards”.

So far, no official explanation has been given.

The wave of “boycotting foreign holidays” in China in recent years can be traced back to a document published by the Communist Party in 2017, “Opinions on Implementing the Project of Inheritance and Development of Excellent Chinese Traditional Culture”. This document strongly advocates the promotion of traditional Chinese culture. Although the document instructs that “our festival” theme activities should be carried out, the project of revitalizing traditional Chinese festivals should be implemented, and the cultural connotations of traditional festivals such as Spring Festival, Lantern Festival and Qingming Festival should be enriched and new festival customs should be formed. But there is no mention of boycotting Western festivals.

It is reported that there are still many schools and institutions, “spontaneous” boycott of foreign festivals.
