An explosion occurred in downtown Nashville, the country music capital of the world, on Christmas Friday morning in the United States. Three people are known to have been injured. The powerful explosion occurred after a camper van played a terrifying countdown on a loudspeaker. The explosion took place in front of the AT&T “Batman Building”.
According to AFP, the explosion occurred in a shopping area and caused extensive damage to the surrounding building facades. The force of the explosion was felt for miles around. Many windows of apartments, stores and offices were blown out. Glass, branches and bricks with many pieces littered the ground, water pipes were punctured and parked vehicles were damaged or burned. According to local firefighters, at least three people suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.
In initial comments, Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said, “We believe this was an intentional act. The neighborhood has been placed on lockdown by law enforcement. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Weapons and Explosives Task Force led the investigation.” The White House said President Donald Trump “has been informed” of the situation.
A police patrol responded to a call of shots fired shortly before 6 a.m. and then found the camper parked in front of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) building on Second North Street. The tall building is also known as the Batman Building because of its image.
The city’s police chief, John Drake, revealed at noon that officers “heard the sound of a tape coming from inside the vehicle” warning that a bomb was about to explode in 15 minutes. Police then went door-to-door, broadcasting messages over loudspeakers, urging residents of surrounding buildings to evacuate before the vehicle exploded.
