Chinese-made drone ‘Rainbow 4’ shot down by Yemeni rebels

Yemeni anti-government militant group Houthi (also known as the Youth Movement) spokesman Yehia Sarie recently said they successfully shot down a Saudi Arabian Rainbow-4 attack drone, which was sold to the Saudi Arabian National Army by China in 2017, foreign media reported.

According to Fighter Jets World, Houthi spokesman Sari alleged that the Saudi Air Force drone was shot down by their anti-aircraft missiles in the Medghal region of Marib province, about 50 miles east of the Saudi capital of Sana’a, according to the report.

The report noted that the Houthi forces also released a video of thermal imaging equipment tracking the drone to confirm their claims, showing the thermal imaging following the arrow toward the drone for a period of time before the missile hit the drone; it is reported that the Houthi forces’ air defense is equipped with a certain number of Western-made vehicle-mounted anti-aircraft missile systems, which have shot down F-15s belonging to the Saudi Air Force in the past.

The Rainbow 4 UAV is developed and produced by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), with a length of 9 meters, a wingspan of 18 meters, and a height of 2.7 meters, and can carry weapons such as AR-1 laser-guided missiles, TG-100 laser-inertial-guided bombs, and FT-9 satellite-guided bombs, and can carry up to 300 kilograms of ammunition.

It is reported that China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation is China’s largest aerospace company, from the space rocket Long March series, artificial satellites are part of the group.
