On March 23, 2016, the Changchun Intermediate People’s Court fully adopted Zhang Siyan’s testimony and pronounced a verdict on the same day, sentencing Zhang Wen to death and depriving him of his political rights for life. The case was triggered by a family conflict, and there were additional circumstances of surrender, so the punishment was lighter and the execution was suspended for 2 years. In court, Zhang Wen said he fully obeyed and did not appeal.
The verdict mentions that Zhang Wen never found evidence of Wang Chun’s cheating and only suspected his wife for many years. Zhang Siyan wept, feeling that his mother had exchanged her blood for this belated innocence, and felt more and more pity for his mother’s death and his father’s inexcusable death.
The verdict came out, Siyan’s parents’ relatives were all in tears and sobbing, and the grandmother was so sad that she fainted after the verdict. When she woke up, her first words were, “My poor daughter.” Then she said to Siyan, “That murderer, don’t ever go to see him.”
Siyan nodded her head, her heart like a knife.
Uncle took Siyan to his home, and the family seldom talked about it again. And then, the grandmother accepted the court’s mediation, in terms of civil compensation, from the initial 640,000 down to 200,000. However, because of the lack of money, the grandmother’s family only paid out $23,000 for funeral expenses. Grandma did not appeal and gave the money to Zhang Siyan’s aunt – who had previously advanced Zhang Siyan’s mother’s funeral expenses.
The aunt symbolically received the compensation, and most of the money has since been used for Siyan’s tuition and living expenses.
On June 29, 2017, Siyan’s mother passed away on her second anniversary.
Siyan said to her grandmother, “Grandma, my mother has been gone for two years, don’t you want to see her?” Grandma wet her eyes and, accompanied by her aunt and uncle and Siyan, bought many offerings and went to pay her respects to her daughter-in-law – and purposely staggered the time for fear of meeting her in-laws.
