The Blue Book of China International Migration Report 2020 shows that approximately 10.73 million people migrated from the mainland in 2019, ranking third in the world for total international migration output. Despite the continued deterioration of U.S.-China relations, the U.S. still ranked as the top emigration destination for the mainland last year, followed by Japan and Canada. In recent years, information about Chinese tycoons stepping up their “run” has been coming to light.
Recently, the Blue Book of China International Migration Report 2020, published by Social Science Literature Press and co-authored by the Globalization Think Tank (CCG) and the Development Research Institute of Southwest University of Finance and Economics, was released.
The data shows that mainland China has become the world’s third largest exporter of migrants with about 10,732,300 exported migrants.
The U.S., Japan and Canada are still the main destination countries. Further looking at the distribution of sending destination countries, in addition to the 2,772,300 people from mainland China who moved to Hong Kong and the 297,600 people who moved to Macau, among the top 20 destination countries for sending immigrants from mainland China in 2019, the United States topped the list with 2,889,200 people, followed by Japan with 784,800 people and Canada with 691,500 people.
In addition, the trend of mainland students studying abroad continues, and the trend of younger immigrants has emerged. According to the 2019 U.S. Open Doors Report, the number of Chinese students in the U.S. reached 369,548 in the 2018-2019 academic year, accounting for 33.7% of the total number of international students, and China continues to be the largest international student source country; while according to the 2019 U.K. International Student Report, the total number of mainland Chinese students staying in the U.K. reached 106,000. According to the UK Student Report 2019, the total number of students from mainland China in the UK reached 106,000, accounting for 23.2% of the total number of international students in the UK, an increase of 12%, making it the number one source country. The trend of gradual expansion of under-age study abroad is becoming more and more apparent. The number of Chinese students attending high school in the U.S. has increased 98.6 times in the last decade, much higher than the 14 times at the undergraduate level.
The report analyzes that the rapid growth of immigrants from the mainland has led to the development of the immigration and study abroad agency industry.
In recent years, there have been media reports that the number of wealthy immigrants from mainland China is the highest in the world. There are more and more millionaires and billionaires in China who are increasingly keen to emigrate.
On the Hurun Global Rich List published this year, 28.37% of the list is occupied by rich people from China, and the number of Chinese rich people has the highest total share among all countries.
According to the Global Wealth Migration Report 2019, the number of mainland tycoons emigrating overseas increased by 50% to 15,000 in 2018 compared to 2017. China ranks first in the world in the number of wealthy people emigrating overseas, exactly double that of Russia, which ranks second.
Such a growth rate makes the country “worried”. Because the vast majority of China’s wealth is concentrated in the hands of the rich.
Some commentators say that because of the Communist Party’s foreign exchange control, if the mainland tycoons want to transfer their assets, the best way is to emigrate overseas, and it is foreseeable that the boom of Chinese tycoons emigrating overseas will continue for some time.
Chinese tycoons are very unified in their value judgment of the target countries for emigration, namely good living environment, sound legal system, and safe asset management.
In March, Chinese billionaire Li Xiaoming’s family of five out of six joined the U.S. citizenship, which was hotly speculated by the land media.
With the title “Another richest man ‘runs away’, worth 29 billion, five of his six family members have joined the U.S.”, the land media reported that Li Xiaoming, the richest man in Yunnan, whose family is worth 29 billion yuan, has emigrated to the United States.
Another article titled “Another 10 billionaire family emigrated, how are you doing in the US?” is also about Li Xiaoming’s family emigrating to the United States.
According to the report, Li Xiaoming’s family is the de facto controller of the listed company Enjie, holding more than 50% of the shares. In this year’s 100 million yuan dividend, Li Xiaoming’s family took half of it.
The report said that in the just-released annual report, Li Xiaoming, his wife Ma Yan, his daughter Sherry Lee, his brother Li Xiaohua, his sister-in-law Hui Yangyang, Jerry Yang Li and five of the six others are all American nationals.
Although his brother Li Xiaohua is a Chinese national, he has a U.S. green card that allows him to live permanently in the United States.
Li, 62, is a super-rich man in the Yunnan region. On the 2020 Hurun Global Rich List, Li’s family is worth a whopping $29 billion, placing them firmly in the top three in Yunnan.
