Trump places visa restrictions on 39 people involved in undermining democracy in Belarus

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the State Department has imposed visa restrictions on 39 individuals involved in undermining democracy in Belarus.

“The State Department has taken steps to impose visa restrictions on 39 individuals involved in undermining democracy in Belarus,” a statement released by the State Department said.

The document says such restrictions are currently imposed by 63 individuals.

In the presidential elections held in Belarus on August 9, Alexander Lukashenko won for the sixth time. According to the Central Electoral Commission, Lukashenko received 80.1 percent of the vote. Since then, mass opposition protests have broken out in Belarus. The protests have continued to this day, with the largest demonstrations taking place every Sunday. Law enforcement officials say there has been a surge in protests in Belarus, with protests moving from the streets to the yards of residential buildings. Meanwhile, Western countries, including EU member states, have imposed individual sanctions on a range of Belarusian officials, accusing them of using violence against protesters and tampering with presidential election results. The EU sanctions list includes President Aleksandr Lukashenka.
