Russia’s single-day confirmed illnesses double the record high, not considering the national closure of the city

Russia today reported 29,935 new confirmed coronavirus cases and 635 deaths, both of which are the highest single-day records since the outbreak began.

According to Russian health officials, the cumulative number of confirmed coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in Russia has reached 2,963,688, the fourth highest in the world, and the cumulative number of untreated infections has reached 53,096.

The report pointed out that the death rate of the disease in Russia is much lower than that of other hard-hit countries, raising concerns that the authorities may be downplaying the scale of the epidemic.

Data released earlier this month by Russia’s statistics unit showed that the number of deaths in the country from March to October this year was nearly 165,000 more than the same period last year, suggesting that the actual number of people who died of the disease may be much higher than the official figure.

Officials also reported yesterday that a record number of new cases were diagnosed in a single day in Moscow, the capital city where the outbreak is most severe. Russian officials have said, however, that there is no need to resume the nationwide closure that was in place at the beginning of the outbreak this spring.
