Vaccine: Over 1 million people in the U.S. got their first shot

The head of the U.S. federal public health agency announced Wednesday that more than one million people in the United States have been vaccinated against the coronavirus (Covid-19). This is a key step in the largest vaccination campaign in U.S. history.

After 3 million doses of vaccine were delivered last week, Robert Redfield, head of the U.S. federal public health agency, announced yesterday, Wednesday, that local authorities are now reporting that more than 1 million people have received their first doses of the vaccine.”

Dr. Moncef Slaoui, senior advisor to the U.S. government’s immunization program, told the media that the original goal of immunizing 20 million people by the end of the year “will probably not be met.

The U.S. goal, however, remains to vaccinate 100 million people by the end of the first quarter of 2021 and another 100 million by the end of the second quarter, Dr. Slaoui said.

Robert Redfield called on Americans to continue to keep social distance and wear masks until everyone in the U.S. is vaccinated. Because the current coronavirus epidemic continues, an additional 210,000 people tested positive on Wednesday. The coronavirus epidemic is the most severe scourge in the United States, with more than 320,000 deaths.

70-85% of the population immunized

The U.S. began national vaccination against coronavirus (Covid-19) on Dec. 14. So far, U.S. health authorities have approved the distribution of two vaccines produced by Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna.

U.S. immunologist Anthony Fauci said Wednesday that if the move to vaccinate the U.S. population goes smoothly, it could reach a level of 70-85 percent of the U.S. population immunized by next summer. Such an immunization percentage, once it occurs, will provide the nation with an umbrella against coronavirus.

According to this immunization expert, key populations such as nursing home residents, caregivers, essential workers or those at risk should be vaccinated in March through early April. after early April, the vaccine can be opened for anyone who wishes to receive it.

The U.S. Pentagon announced yesterday the purchase of an additional 100 million doses of vaccine from Pfizer/Biotech, a delivery period that runs from now through next July. This puts the entire U.S. vaccine order at 400 million doses, half of which will come from Pfizer and the other half from Modena.
