Europe and China may reach investment agreement Biden camp pressure to think twice

The EU and China plan to sign a Europe-China investment agreement by the end of the year, with EU Chief Trade Representative Valdis Dombrovskis and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He finalizing the agreement’s final details on Monday (21), but China’s refusal to budge on human rights, particularly forced labor in Xinjiang, has caused the agreement to be questioned by European think tanks, media and MEPs as being too rushed.

Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser nominated by U.S. President-elect Joe Biden, also pressed the issue on Twitter, republishing the story and saying, “The Biden Administration welcomes early consultations between our European partners and us on shared concerns about China’s economic activities.” (The Biden-Harris administration would welcome early consultations with our European partners on our common concerns about China’s economic practices.), advocating that the EU brakes the agreement and discusses it with the United States.

It is expected that the Biden administration’s plan to “unite Europe against China” may be affected once the EU-China investment agreement is reached.
