U.S. Announces Sanctions Against Various Belarusian Government Agencies and Officials

The US announced sanctions against several Government agencies and officials of Belarus Monday, ria Novosti reported. The announcement was posted on the WEBSITE of the US Treasury Department. They include the Central Election and Referendum Commission, The First Deputy Minister of the Interior, Alexander Kazakevich, the Alfa Special Forces of the Bel-Russian National Security Council, the Minsk City Executive Committee, the General Directorate of the Interior, and the Minsk City Special Police.

The United States says the government departments and personnel were placed on the sanctions list for their use of violence against peaceful demonstrators and for tampering with the results of the presidential election. In addition, the State Department announced that 39 Officials from Belarus have been added to the list to express its dissatisfaction with the Belarusian government for undermining the democratic process. Earlier, the EU also imposed sanctions on Belarus, including entry restrictions and funding. The sanctions list included 88 government officials and seven government organizations, including The Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
