Report: Average height of Chinese adults increased, but more than half are overweight

The average height of Chinese adults has increased this year compared to five years ago, but the problem of obesity has worsened, the Chinese government said in a report released Wednesday.

China’s State Council Information Office released the “Report on the State of Nutrition and Chronic Diseases of the Chinese Population (2020)” on the same day. The report noted that the average height of Chinese adult men aged 18 to 44 reached 169.7 centimeters, an increase of 1.2 centimeters from the results released in 2015. The average height of women reached 158 centimeters, an increase of 0.8 centimeters from the previous results.

However, Li Bin, deputy director of China’s National health Commission, said at a press conference that China’s chronic disease base continues to grow, and a major reason for this is the growing prevalence of overweight and obesity. Among Chinese adults over 18 years old, for example, the overweight rate has exceeded 34 percent this year and the obesity rate is over 16 percent, which means that more than half of adults are overweight.

Chang Jile, director of the National Health Commission’s Bureau of Disease Prevention and Control, said that with the gradual increase in life and work stress in recent years, mental health problems in China are becoming increasingly significant. According to the report, about 2 percent of Chinese people suffered from depression and 5 percent from anxiety last year.
