German officials call on Beijing to release two Canadians, China dislikes: Don’t

Germany will end its two-year term on the UN Security Council at the end of this year. Christoph Heusgen, the retiring German permanent representative to the UN, called on China to release two Canadian citizens in his final speech to the council, prompting Chinese Ambassador to the UN Geng Shuang to retort, “Don’t.”

Speaking at the Security Council meeting, which was on the subject of Iran, Heusgen said he called on the Chinese government to release former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor as he approaches the end of his term on the council.

Geng Shuang, China’s deputy representative to the United Nations, accused Hoygen of abusing the Security Council platform to launch “malicious” attacks against other member states. He added: “Farewell, Ambassador Hoesgen. I hope that the Security Council without you will be able to better fulfill its responsibility for maintaining international peace and security in 2021.”

Kang and Spavor were detained by the Chinese after Canada arrested huawei‘s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou in 2018 at the request of the United States. In June, Beijing authorities charged them with espionage.
