The German government today reported 962 new deaths from coronavirus disease in 2019, a new record high for a single day. Germany has imposed a mandatory lockdown since the 16th, forcing most stores, barbershops and other services out of business and closing schools at all levels.
Reuters reports that 952 deaths were reported on the day the lockdown took effect, the previous single-day high.
The latest figures released by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), part of the German Federal Ministry of health, show that as many as 27,968 people have died in the country.
The eastern German state of Saxony, which has been hit hard by the second wave of the epidemic, reported the highest average death toll during the epidemic, with about 57 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
Statistics released today by the RKI show that the number of confirmed cases in Germany has increased by 24,740, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 1,554,920.
