The U.S. Department of Defense announced today that in order to stop the spread of the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic, the United States has purchased an additional 100 million doses of vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech Biotech of Germany, with delivery expected in July next year.
This brings the total supply of vaccines available in the U.S. to 400 million doses, with Pfizer and BioNTech Biotech accounting for half of the total and Moderna Biotech the other half. Because each person must receive two doses, these vaccines can be administered to 200 million people.
The U.S. Department of Defense issued a statement saying, “Under the terms of the agreement, Pfizer will provide at least 70 million doses by June 30 of next year, with the remaining 100 million doses to be delivered by July 31 of next year.”
The U.S. hopes to administer the vaccine to 20 million people this month in order to receive priority for the long-term care population and health care workers.
A committee of experts said on the 20th that the next priority would be the elderly over the age of 75 and the 30 million “frontline key workers” including teachers, grocery store employees and police officers.
