EVA New Zealand captain coughing and refusing to wear a mask infected two pilots and Quanta female employees Taiwan worried about community infection

A female employee of Taiwan‘s Quanta Group, the world’s leading notebook computer and server foundry, was diagnosed with Newcastle pneumonia yesterday, becoming the 771st confirmed case in Taiwan. Although the situation is much better than in Europe and the United States, what worries all walks of life in Taiwan is that this thirty-something female employee is the first local case to break out again in Taiwan after 253 days.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen today called on the public not to panic too much, stressing that one case cannot negate the efforts of the past year to prevent the epidemic, but enough to remind everyone that preventing the epidemic is difficult and requires the government and people to work together. She also reminded the people of Taiwan that the New Year’s Day holiday is approaching and it is good to rest at home.

The female employee of Quanta was infected by a New Zealand male captain of EVA Air in his sixties. The Taiwan Epidemic Command Center investigated and analyzed that the captain was infected during the flight to the United States from 11/29 to 12/4, and was quarantined at home in Taiwan for three days from 12/4, and then went out in close contact with the female employee of Quanta from 12/7, covering several department stores in Taipei City and Taoyuan City.

According to the investigation, the captain did not like to wear a mask, even though Evergreen regulations must wear a mask when on duty, he frequently cough, just do not wear. This led to the infection to the female employee of Quanta before it was transmitted to the two pilots of EVA. Although he was advised to wear a mask by EVA’s on-duty staff, he ignored it. Evergreen has set up an investigation committee, if the investigation is true, the captain will be removed from office.

The captain not only coughed without wearing a mask, but after the diagnosis was confirmed, he refused to cooperate with the health unit’s epidemic investigation, saying he couldn’t even remember. In the end, the health unit had to inform the police and check all his movements in Taiwan according to his cell phone and car location, before he admitted that he had contact with the female employee of Quanta.

At present, Taiwan’s health unit has been in Quanta Group subsidiary Guangming Optoelectronics and confirmed female employees at work contact all 167 people arranged for testing, 13 people were asked to home isolation. As for the first case of aircraft infection in Taiwan caused by the New Zealand captain on the plane, 87 people have been tested so far, of whom three are confirmed, and the testing is still in progress.

Taiwan officials said that the captain and female staff infection will not spread into the community infection, there are two observation focus, one is that the two have been to many public places, so it depends on 25 days ago, these places have not appeared to notify the confirmed diagnosis; the second focus is that the results of the 167 employees of the Guangming company testing will be how exactly. This case makes the Taiwanese apprehensive.
