Japan announces temporary suspension of entry of foreigners from the UK from the 24th

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsushin Kato announced at a press conference on December 23 that the initial entry of foreigners from the UK will be suspended from December 24 in order to strengthen border precautions due to the spread of the mutated New Coronavirus in the UK.

The previously permitted measure of exempting foreigners with medium- and long-term residency status residing in Japan and returning to the UK for short-term business trips within 7 days from quarantine will also be suspended, requiring a 14-day quarantine. For Japanese returning from the U.K., from December 27, prompting a negative New Crown test certificate within 72 hours prior to departure from the U.K. will be required.

With the rapid spread of the New Crown variant of the virus, the UK has now implemented a strict Tier 4 restriction order affecting the movement of tens of millions of people, while many countries around the world have announced bans on entry for UK travelers and foreigners from the UK.

In order to promote the restart of economic activities and the movement of people that have been affected by the New Crown epidemic, the government has previously exempted people returning home after business trips and those re-entering the country from quarantine if they meet certain conditions. Entry from the UK is currently restricted to Japanese and foreigners with mid- to long-term visas.

Kato said, “The government will continue to take flexible measures at border crossings by putting the first priority on thoroughly guarding the health and lives of the nationals and making everyone feel safe and secure through the end of the year.”

According to the BBC, the number of countries and territories with restrictions on entry from the UK has increased to more than 50 worldwide. Sweden and Denmark began banning foreigners from entering the country.
