French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said today on Twitter that the suspect in the shooting deaths of three police officers in the central Puy-de-Dome department had been found dead.
Damanin’s tweet did not elaborate on the cause of death of the 48-year-old suspect, except to say that he was on his way to the scene of the crime near the village of Saint-Just. The village is located in the southern part of the city of Clermont-Ferrand.
Police said the officers were responding to a domestic violence report and went to the scene to try to rescue a woman when he was shot by the 48-year-old man.
AFP reports that the officers arrived at the house shortly after midnight and were then shot by the man. One officer was shot and killed and another was wounded before the man set the house on fire, at which point two other officers were also shot and killed.
Officials said the woman the police went to rescue has been safely rescued, there are still at least seven police elite unit personnel remain at the scene, firefighters have also arrived at the scene to help control the fire.
