Mutant virus infectivity increased by 70%? German experts question: Where did the data come from?

A variant of the Chinese Communist virus that the United Kingdom announced was “70% more infectious” has begun to spread, sparking global panic. But no medical experts have yet released data on the contagiousness of the virus, and a leading German expert questioned the authenticity of the figure.

In an interview with the director of the Institute for Virus Research at the Charité Hospital in Berlin on 21 May, Drosten said there is a lack of academic evidence to suggest that the infectivity of the mutant strain has increased.

Drosten further questioned the source of the 70% figure. He speculated that the British government may have simply asked a researcher to give an estimate, and then the 70% figure entered political circles, where it was widely quoted by politicians and reported by the media. But the truth is, no one probably knows what that number means.

Drosten implied that the current medical community does not have enough information to come up with the 70 percent figure. He said that the data provided by British researchers on the new virus is not sufficient, even the preliminary analysis results, will not be available until a week later.

Drosten has previously said that mutations in the virus could make it bind more firmly to the receptor, but that does not necessarily mean a new advantage or affect the effectiveness of the vaccine.

The CCP virus is highly susceptible to mutation. An earlier study by British experts reported that the number of mutations had already exceeded 12,000.

More than 40 countries around the world have banned British flights after the UK announced the spread of this new strain of the virus. British Prime Minister Johnson also said that the Christmas period will restart the closure of the city order.

But U.S. President Donald Trump criticized that “the cure should not be worse than the problem itself.” The U.S. left has been trying to hit Trump with draconian city closures that hurt the economy.
