U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she agrees with President Trump’s proposal to send $2,000 in direct aid to every American.
U.S. President Donald Trump (Trump) posted a pre-recorded video on social media Tuesday (Dec. 22) asking Congress to make changes to the latest round of the $900 billion relief bill to remove certain improper spending and increase economic assistance payments to ordinary people.
Trump said he wants Congress to increase the amount of stimulus checks sent directly to the American people to $2,000 for individuals or $4,000 for couples, instead of the $600 currently in the bill.
Trump said he would veto the relief bill if the changes were not made.
Later, House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) replied to President Trump, saying, “Republicans repeatedly refused to disclose the amount of the check the president wanted to directly (fund people). Finally, the President has agreed to $2,000 – and Democrats are prepared to vote by unanimous consent this week. Let’s get it done!”
Georgia’s two Democratic Senate candidates also tweeted that they support sending $2,000 bailouts to Americans.
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said in his year-end speech Tuesday that Democratic Sen. Bernie Sanders and Republican Sen. Josh Hawley’s proposal to give direct money to the people was included in this relief, only this time halving their plan to give $1,200 per person to $600 per person.
Biden called the economic stimulus bill passed this week a “down payment.
When asked about the exact amount of his stimulus package, he replied, “That’s a matter of negotiation.”
Republican Sen. Hawley tweeted Tuesday night, “President Trump is right. Workers deserve more than $600 and I have repeatedly said and fought for that. Clearly there is a lot of money available to do that – look at what Congress has thrown out on corporate grants and foreign takeovers. Let’s get it done.
“Pelosi repeatedly asked Treasury Secretary Mnuchin what Trump’s position was on direct money, but he declined to answer. President Trump has told me repeatedly that he wants to give workers higher relief payments.”
Other Republican senators have also called on House Speaker Pelosi not to just increase individual aid payments to Americans, but to have to cut out unnecessary aid to foreign countries as well to do so.
According to the bill, the $900 billion relief bill for foreign aid includes $85.5 million for Cambodia, $134 million for Burma, $1.3 billion for Egypt and the Egyptian military, $25 million for democracy and gender programs in Pakistan, and $505 million for Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.
