China expert Gordon Chang says the Obama administration’s bad space policy has cost the U.S. many space assets relative to the Chinese Communist Party. Now that adviser Biden is urging a limited space partnership with Beijing, Zhang argues that working with the Chinese Communist Party would be tantamount to allowing intellectual property theft. The United States must find a way to protect its space assets.
In an interview with Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” on Monday night (Dec. 21), Gordon said the United States must find a way to protect itself and its assets in space by not allowing the Chinese Communist Party to gain a foothold on the moon in the first place. Otherwise, the Chinese Communist Party will use the best sites for military purposes.
Zhang’s comments came in response to a report in the U.S. media outlet Politico. According to the report, Biden’s senior advisers urged the new administration to establish a “limited space partnership” with Beijing, hoping to ease tensions between the two countries.
Zhang Jiatun: Working with China is a terrible suggestion
Biden’s advisers came from the Obama administration when the U.S. had a terrible space policy that allowed the Chinese (Communist Party of China) to make huge advances at a great disadvantage to the U.S. itself, said Gordon Chang. “We can work with the Chinese (Communist Party of China) in space, which sounds great, but we know they steal hundreds of billions of dollars worth of U.S. intellectual property every year.” He said.
“More importantly, the Chinese (Communist Party of China) space program is militarily oriented,” Zhang added. “So any technology transfer ends up increasing the military capabilities of the Chinese (Communist Party of China), which deploys its military to kill Americans.”
The United States has a big lead in space relative to the Chinese Communist Party, Zhang said. During the Obama administration, Obama said that the U.S. should not militarize space because it would be a loser. That sounds like it makes sense, said Gordon Chang. “However, the problem that comes with those words that sound reasonable is that China (the Chinese Communist Party) and Russia are militarizing space, they’re weaponizing themselves, and we’re not protecting our assets in space.”
Gordon Chang sounded the alarm about the Chinese Communist Party’s space ambitions and urged that the United States must find a way to protect space assets. Otherwise, “the next 9/11 will happen in space and we will be its victims.”
The Trump administration is clear about the Chinese Communist Party’s challenge to build a Space Force to deal with space threats
The Trump (Trump) administration established the Space Force last year specifically to deal with space threats. Trump has said that the Space Force is a top national security priority. The force will be responsible for a range of U.S. military equipment in space, including satellites that enable the Global Positioning System and sensors that track missile launches, among other things. It will have “operational and combat support capabilities to enable rapid and sustained offensive and defensive operations in space.”
Vice President Mike Pence said in August 2018, when he announced details of his plan to establish a Space Force, that countries such as China (Communist Party of China), Russia, North Korea and Iran are seeking “ways to bring new weapons of war into space” and that the U.S. must dominate in space.
Pence said the space environment has changed fundamentally in the last generation. What was once a peaceful and uncontested environment now faces congestion and confrontation. “Today, other nations are trying to undermine our space system and challenge U.S. dominance in space in ways that have never been done before.”
“Their actions show that our adversaries have transformed space into a battlefield, and the United States will not shy away from that challenge,” Pence said. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we will rise to the occasion and defend our nation and build a peaceful future on Earth and in space.”
